The online dating world is one that’s full of excitement and innumerable like-minded singles just waiting to find their special someone. But with all of that other competition floating around in cyberspace, how do you create the perfect profile that will attract the type of attention you’re looking for and stand out from all the others? Here are some tips for creating an online dating profile that will get the results you’re hoping for:

Your User Name

The user name, or log-in name, you choose will be the very first thing prospective dates will see and know about you. For this reason, it’s imperative to take the time to think of the best user name for you. Try to think of something that’s memorable and conveys who you are, but one that’s not too difficult to spell or will get overlooked amongst the thousands of others online. Using your real first and last name is always strongly discouraged lest you attract the unwanted attention of someone without all of their marbles.

Your Profile’s Headline

While you want to come up with a catchy headline that’s noticeable, you definitely want to steer clear of one that conveys a sense of neediness or desperation. For example, “Single, Sad and Lonely” would attract far less interest than, “Unattached and Interested in New Adventures.” Likewise, “Young, Innocent, and Up for Fun” seems far too suggestive as opposed to something a little more tame along the lines of, “Not Yet Jaded and Ready for New Experiences.” Just be sure that your headline really conveys your personality, and you’ll soon find someone that’s meant for you.

Your Profile

The bulk of your profile is typically comprised of your likes and dislikes and usually has plenty of places to include useful bits of information you’d like to share. Don’t ever be afraid to be selective, opinionated, and make your true feelings known – to a certain degree, of course. Your profile should be enticing – it’s not the place for a rant on your true feelings about the state of the nation’s health care system.

Your Photo

Online singles ads and profiles without an accompanying picture are overlooked ten to fifteen times more often than those with a photo. Be sure to include at least one clear photo of yourself that’s been taken recently, within the last 6 months or so. Don’t use your high school graduation picture that was taken twenty years ago, and likewise, steer clear from those that have other people in them as it distracts from the main subject of the picture – you.

Your Spelling

Yes, neatness, spelling, and grammar all count when creating a personals ad or an online profile. While you don’t need to be a national spelling bee champ in order to attract or retain attention, horrible spelling and grammar gives off a disorganized, messy vibe that will cover up your sparkling personality. Although it’s certainly true that some of the world’s brightest people are horrible spellers, they’re also smart enough to proofread and use the spell check feature.
